In 2023 the team met June, a resilient young woman whose family had lost everything in a devastating flood. Her father had left, and her mother was caring for three children with no home and no food, forced to beg to feed them.

With no money for school fees or supplies, June could not attend school. She was at an age when many girls in her community are pushed toward early marriage or exploitation, and she held on instead to the belief that one day she would return to school and become a medical officer.

After meeting her, the team enrolled June in the sponsorship program. She completed her high school diploma with excellent grades, then finished a course in computer applications. She has since been accepted into university. Hardworking and dedicated, her greatest dream is to help her mother out of poverty and build a house they can call their own.

School has been paid for since 2021 through the Baskets and Beads Kenya student sponsorship program: fees, uniform, supplies, and mentorship from the Kenya team.

In June’s words

“Since Baskets and Beads Kenya, I have been able to finish my high school diploma, and now I have been accepted into university to study a Bachelor of Science in Criminology and Security Studies.”
