Rebecca is a young woman of remarkable resilience. As the eldest of five children, her childhood was marked by significant challenges. With a father battling alcoholism, her mother worked tirelessly to provide for the family, but the financial strain made Rebecca's education impossible to afford.
After excelling in her Class 8 examinations, Rebecca faced a heartbreaking reality: she could not join high school. The cost of fees and supplies kept her home for an entire term. Undeterred, she spent that time working alongside her mother, cleaning houses to help put food on the table.
In May 2023 the team met Rebecca. Despite having missed a full term, she was not discouraged. Her determination to continue her education was undimmed, at an age when many girls in her situation are pushed into early marriage. Rebecca was resolute that education was the key to a better future.
She is now in Form 3 and working hard to catch up with her peers. She dreams of becoming a doctor, and there is no doubt her work and determination will carry her there.
School has been paid for since 2023 through the Baskets and Beads Kenya student sponsorship program: fees, uniform, supplies, and mentorship from the Kenya team.
In Rebecca’s words
