Patricia Lele

Paper beads, Turkana baskets, Christmas angels

She travelled 297 kilometres from Lodwar to Kitale looking for a future.

“Since I joined Baskets and Beads I am able to take my children to school, provide food, and get healthcare.”

Patricia and her children came from Lodwar to Kitale on the back of a food truck, a journey of about 297 kilometres. They came in search of a better life, but when they arrived they knew no one, and lived on the streets before moving to the Kipsongo slum. She lived in a house built from plastic bags, and life was genuinely hard.

Patricia started out selling beads on the streets, but most days she made no sales. When she joined Baskets and Beads she finally had somewhere to sell her work and provide for her children. She makes paper beads, Turkana baskets, Christmas angels, and seed bead bracelets, and she is hardworking, determined, and generous. Her children are in school, she can provide food and healthcare, and she is a step closer to a place of her own where they can grow up.

In Patricia’s words

“For my children to get an equal opportunity in education and a better life, and to have a place of our own.”
