Susan

Beads & vegetable trade

Eight children, two income streams, and a great deal of determination.

“I have grown emotionally and spiritually. My dreams are becoming a reality.”

Susan grew up in the Kipsongo slum. Her dream was to become a nurse, but her parents could not afford to keep her in school. She dropped out in the fifth grade and worked menial jobs with her mother to make ends meet, taking any work she could find, including work that left her feeling degraded. She married young, and life became harder after having children. With more mouths to feed she began searching for food in the dumpster.

After joining the Baskets and Beads group, Susan started to feel hope. The women encourage, pray for, and teach each other. She began selling her beads and made enough to start a side business selling vegetables, and she can now provide the basics for her children. Her dream is to give them a safe home and a proper education so they can reach their own dreams, and to help other women in her community.

In Susan’s words

“To change my mindset and to keep working hard and learning.”

Every gift widens the circle.

$150 supports one woman through literacy education. $1,500 to $2,500 can provide a student with a year of education.
